Renowned Surgeon and Mesothelioma Researcher, Dr. David Sugarbaker, Passes Away at 65

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. David Sugarbaker who was a world-renowned thoracic surgeon and mesothelioma researcher.

Dr. Sugarbaker dedicated his entire career to mesothelioma research in the hopes of finding a cure for pleural mesothelioma. His innovative research into new diagnostics and treatments helped countless patients.

In a statement released by the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the current president and secretary of the organization stated that Dr. Sugarbaker was "a legendary pioneer who helped define the management of patients."

Dr. Sugarbaker practiced at Brigham & Women's Hospital for 26 years. He also built the International Mesothelioma Program, which is one of the largest mesothelioma treatment and research programs in the world. After teaching surgery at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Sugarbaker went on to become the director of the Lung Institute at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Dr. Sugarbaker received special recognition throughout his career. He was annually named as one of "America's Top Doctors" since 2002 by Castle Connolly, with special distinctions in 2007 and 2009.

His passion, dedication, and leadership, and knowledge have left an indelible imprint on the field of mesothelioma research and treatment as well as the lives of his patients and everyone that knew him.
