Protecting a Workforce From Asbestos Exposure

Adobe Brayton18.jpegAsbestos exposure can impact the lives of workers from a seemingly endless list of occupations - as well as their families. From construction workers to auto mechanics - from factory workers to miners - the threat of asbestos exposure is a daily concern often with fatal consequences.

Is your employer doing everything they can to protect you?

While the active use of asbestos has stopped, employers must remember that decades of aggressive use has resulted in pipes, fittings, insulation and other construction materials relying on the heat-resistant properties of the fibers. Whether it is a home renovation, demolition or large-scale construction project, employers and supervisors must remain vigilant in protecting their workers from the dangers of asbestos exposure.

  • Testing: From popcorn ceilings to attic insulation, construction materials used prior to 1980 should be tested to determine the presence of asbestos fibers. If these materials are broken or pulverized, they can release the deadly fibers into the air - leading to inhalation.
  • Safety gear: Workers must be provided with the gear necessary to keep them safe through the completion of the project. The gear can vary based on the job requirements, but can include respirators with heavy filters, safety masks and a hooded protective jumpsuit.
  • Safe clean-up: Closely related to the previous point, employees should never be forced to go home wearing contaminated clothing or safety gear. Jumpsuits, gloves, shoes or goggles should all be left at the worksite to prevent the accidental exposure of family members or other loved ones. This clothing must be cleaned with industrial-strength machines rather than common consumer appliances.
  • Education: From posting OSHA-approved warning signs to clearly discussing the dangers of working with hazardous materials, workers in all industries must have a clear, realistic understanding of the job they are completing.

These and other strategies can protect a worker from asbestos exposure. The inhalation or ingestion of asbestos fibers can result in serious lung diseases including the fatal cancer mesothelioma. If you were exposed to asbestos or you fear a loved one was exposed, it is crucial that you seek the legal guidance of a skilled mesothelioma attorney as soon as possible.

Dry Cough: A Confusing Symptom

Adobe Brayton17.jpegWhile an occasional cough is normal, a persistent cough could indicate a more serious underlying problem. Unfortunately, a dry, recurring cough could be linked to several different serious conditions including mesothelioma. Ultimately, a correct diagnosis might require significant medical detective work to determine the correct underlying disease that is causing the cough.

What can cause a dry cough?

There are various underlying causes for a recurring cough, including:

  • In the early stages of pleural mesothelioma, the lining of the lungs thickens and presses inward. This unnatural pressure can lead to shortness of breath and chest pain in addition to a dry, persistent cough.
  • As tumors develop, they can damage the nerves connecting the lining of the lungs.
  • A buildup of fluid around the lung - known as pleural effusion - can cause coughing.
  • Individuals struggling with pleural mesothelioma commonly develop pneumonia - of which, a dry cough is a common symptom.
  • Mesothelioma treatments such as radiation therapy can increase and worsen a dry cough.

Individuals find a dry, unproductive cough annoying but it might be related to something much more serious than a "tickle in your throat." It is wise to discuss any unusual symptoms with a trusted medical professional.

How can a dry cough be treated?

Those suffering from mesothelioma have numerous options at their disposal, including:

  • Surgery: Removing tumors can ease these symptoms.
  • Palliative procedures: Draining the fluid buildup around tumors can relieve pressure and ease symptoms.
  • Cough remedies: In some situations, simple remedies such as steam inhalation, cough drops or hot water with lemon can lessen symptoms.
  • Avoid triggers: If you notice environmental triggers - aerosol spray, strong perfume or cologne, smoke-filled air - it is best to avoid them.
  • Cough medications: Certain cough suppressants or expectorants can control a recurring cough.

A persistent cough can be indicative of many issues and it can also exacerbate existing conditions - or create new ones. People have complained about throat irritations, chronic headaches or even pulled muscles related to the stress and strain of constant coughing. Individuals have trouble sleeping due to the recurring cough. Emotionally, some people simply avoid going out in public - shopping or to a movie theater - for fear of the embarrassment associated with a constant cough.

If you fear you have been exposed to asbestos, it is crucial that you discuss your situation with a medical professional. An attorney with extensive experience in mesothelioma cases can provide the legal guidance you need.

Is Your Child Being Exposed to Asbestos at School?

1024px-Bauer_Elementary_(ASBESTOS-1).JPGSchools are supposed to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children. However, one school recently closed after maintenance discovered deadly amounts of asbestos.

The University of Montana recently closed one of its buildings that has been used as a preschool attended by around 50 students each year. According to a recent article, many parents are now "deeply concerned" that their children have been exposed to dangerous amounts of asbestos fibers that can lead to deadly cancers.

The most common cancer associated with asbestos exposure is Mesothelioma. Unfortunately, because symptoms of asbestos exposure can take years to develop, many people exposed to asbestos will not show signs for up to 10 to 50 years.

A recent news article reports that tests taken in the Montana preschool showed over 400 thousand asbestos fibers per square centimeter. In comparison, the EPA suggests 5,000 asbestos fibers could result in hazardous exposure. University officials claim that they only became aware of the exposure during a "routine maintenance issue." Tragically, other schools across the country might be exposing children to asbestos fibers without their parents ever knowing.

While the Montana preschool will be closed for the remainder of the year, the university plans on doing frequent inspections when it reopens. The EPA encourages academic and other facilities across the country to conduct asbestos inspections annually to prevent people from dangerous exposures.

Asbestos exposure has been linked to several different lung diseases. Tragically, many of them are known to be fatal. If you or a loved one is diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease, consult with a mesothelioma attorney immediately to discuss your options.
