On August 28, a Los Angeles state court jury awarded $8.45 million to a pipefitter's surviving son after the father, Robert Swanson, had been exposed to asbestos in insulation used in his work on boilers. According to The Virginian-Pilot, the jurors found that the company Weil-McLain had contributed to the father's mesothelioma by distributing the dangerous insulation for use with its boilers.
Witnesses reportedly testified that Weil-McLain bought bags of pure asbestos that had warning labels but repackaged the asbestos into plain bags without warning labels for redistribution to customers.
