Prince William and Duchess Kate have gone to great lengths so their children can enjoy their childhoods—despite the royal spotlight. While they are forbidden from playing with certain toys and aren’t allowed to have best friends in school, they’re still just kids…and pretty normal ones at that!
Take Prince George, for instance, who manages to look adorable even when he’s getting a pep talk from Dad. Like most little ones his age, he has a close relationship with his grandmother. Granted, his grandmother happens to be Queen Elizabeth II, but that doesn’t mean her great-grandson can’t give her a cute nickname.
In an April 2017 ITV special commemorating the Queen’s 90th birthday, Duchess Kate provided a little look into Prince George’s relationship with his great-grandmother:
“He calls her Gan-Gan….She always leaves a little gift or something in their room when we go and stay, and that just shows her love for the family.”
Prince George’s nickname of choice differs a bit from how his father used to address the Queen growing up. Richard Kay, a former Daily Mail royal family reporter, described the first time he learned Prince William’s preferred childhood nickname for the Queen.
“On another occasion, the Queen was on hand after William fell over at Buckingham Palace, bawling: ‘Gary, Gary.’ A guest who went to help asked who Gary was, assuming it must be a member of the royal household. ‘I’m Gary,’ explained the Queen, as she scooped him up. ‘He hasn’t learned to say Granny yet.’”
