The Psychological Impact of Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is an aggressive type of cancer that results from asbestos fibers inhaled into the lungs, heart, or abdomen where it remains. Symptoms such as shortness of breath and chest pain do not show up in the early stages. Tragically, diagnoses mostly occur when the disease has advanced. Victims have an average life span of 12 months following the tragic news.
The physical impact of mesothelioma is wide-ranging. However, the emotional effects depend on how individual patients deal with an uncertain future.
A study from the University of Florida conducted an in-depth analysis of more than 123,000 cases where patients were suffering from advanced-stage pleural mesothelioma and lung cancer, having been diagnosed between 2001 and 2013.
Results revealed that women (22 percent) were more likely to suffer depression than men (16 percent). Specific racial breakdowns for men and women combined show the following:
•· Non-Hispanic white patients - 20 percent
•· Hispanic patients - 12.7 percent
•· Non-Hispanic black patients - 15.9 percent
Depression is not only prominent, but it is also on the rise with nine percent suffering from this form of mental illness while enduring a physical disease. Commonly, these feelings occur within the first three months following a mesothelioma diagnosis.
Regardless of how it occurs, staying physically active is paramount. Even mesothelioma surgery can help alleviate depression. However, giving up favorite activities can only fast-track feelings of hopelessness that can only make a bad situation worse.

Innovation May Lead to Early Detection
For most, a mesothelioma diagnosis represents a death sentence. In spite of medical advancements, early detection is difficult until the disease is in an advanced stage where medical treatment is limited.
Searches for a way to speed up detection have not met with much success, pushing studies to a more "out of the box" category.
Researchers at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Florida recently published a study that may provide a glimmer of hope. The project's findings were surprising, if not a bit unorthodox. Dogs can detect specific cancer biomarkers, giving hope that an over-the-counter mesothelioma test may be possible.
It is no surprise that a dog's sense of smell is significantly more than humans, up to 10,000 times. The researchers used Beagles - provided by a canine training and research firm called BioScentDX - due to the breed having the most sensitive sense of smell. The objective was to see if that breed could identify blood serum samples from lung cancer victims.
For nearly two months, Beagles were exposed to multiple canisters at once that contained blood serums. Only one came from a lung cancer patient. The results were overwhelmingly positive. The dogs accurately detected the cancer samples at a rate of 96.7 percent while ignoring non-cancer canisters 97.5 percent of the time.
That represented a lot of treats for the Beagles and, more importantly, hope for victims of mesothelioma and their family members.
The success of the study has led to a second project that would involve dogs detecting breath samples. Early results are promising.

Johnson & Johnson being Sued over Asbestos and Opioids
Asbestos
Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has faced many lawsuits in the last few years because of asbestos being discovered in their baby powder. Recently, a criminal probe has been launched into whether J&J knowingly lied to the public about the asbestos in their products.
J&J is facing several civil lawsuits from consumers who contracted ovarian cancer from their baby powder. J&J has been sued more than 13,000 times regarding failure to inform consumers that their talcum products contain asbestos.
J&J spokesperson states that they have received subpoenas and that they are fully cooperating with the DOJ investigation. On July 22, a federal judge will evaluate whether available evidence is admissible, in court proceedings.
Opioids
Every day in the United States, more than 130 people die from overdosing on opioids. The misuse of and addiction to opioids-including prescription pain relievers, heroin, and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl-is a serious national crisis.
A seven-week trial just came to a close where Oklahoma Attorney general, Mike Hunter, sued J&J for deceptive marketing to doctors claiming that opioids are "safe and effective for every day pain." J&J has been referred to as the "kingpin" and "cartel" that is fueling the opioid crisis.
Perhaps the most powerful testimony was from Tonya Ratcliff, who is a foster mother to babies born addicted to opioids.
She describes the first days of withdrawal for the infants "hell on earth, and that's being polite about it." She talked about her foster babies crying for days as they went through withdrawal while the state of Oklahoma showed an image of a newborn's legs shaking uncontrollably as a result of the addiction.
Companies like Johnson & Johnson should be held accountable for their negligence, their failure to warn consumers of the associated dangers, and more. If you or a loved one has been injured due to the use of a talcum powder product or an opioid, do not hesitate to schedule a free consultation with one of our attorneys today.

Automotive Workers and Asbestos Exposure
When it comes to asbestos exposure, the list of high-risk occupations is long. From those involved in heavy industry, to construction workers, to Navy shipbuilders, it seems like nearly every blue collar career has workers who are at risk for developing an asbestos-related disease. Automotive workers, unfortunately, are in an often-overlooked occupation.
Due to its heat-resistant properties, the mineral asbestos was used in countless materials both consumer and industrial. Whenever an asbestos containing material is manipulated, deteriorated, crushed, touched, moved, handled, however, there can be deadly health repercussions. Whether ingested or inhaled, asbestos fibers can dramatically impact the lungs and other organs often leading to mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, and other cancers.
While most manufacturers of new vehicles stopped using asbestos 1987, mechanics and others in the automotive industry still face deadly exposure. After-market replacement products often still today contain asbestos, putting mechanics and shade-tree at home DIY owners in direct contact with asbestos fibers. Numerous car parts often contain asbestos, including:
- Hoodliners
- Brake pads and brake linings
- Clutch assemblies
- Gaskets
- Valve rings
- Valve stem packing
- Friction materials
- Heat seals
Auto mechanics who work on older cars, with older parts or with poorly regulated aftermarket parts are at risk of inhaling asbestos fibers from the dust created during inspection, installation, and removal.

Long-term Use of Some Drugs Could Increase Your Risk of Dementia
Researchers have found that risk of developing dementia in patients who are exposed to anticholinergic drugs is heightened. Anticholinergic drugs are a wide classification of drugs that involve contraction and relaxation of muscles. Antidepressants, antipsychotics, anti-Parkinson drugs, anti-epilepsy, and drugs for urinary incontinence - antimuscarinics, are among common forms of anticholinergic drugs commonly prescribed.
Researchers analyzed data from 2004 to 2016; Over 280,000 participants were 55 years of age or older. They found that participants who had taken anticholinergic drugs had about a 50% increase in dementia over those who had not taken the drugs.
Researchers also found that there were "greater increases in risk associated with people diagnosed with dementia before the age of 80, which indicates that anticholinergic drugs should be prescribed with caution in middle-aged and older people."
About 5.8 million people in the U.S. - 5.6 million of whom are 65 and older - live with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Prevalence is expected to balloon to 14 million by the year 2060, the CDC says, with Hispanic and African-American populations seeing the greatest increases.
