Winter Weather and Asbestos Exposure

Adobe Brayton16.jpegWhile not all regions of the United States struggle through aggressive, violent weather change, everyone must be aware of the dangers of asbestos exposure that might be related to the changing seasons. From burst pipes to water leaks damaging attic insulation, residents across the country should stay mindful of the problems that might crop up due to inclement weather.

The biggest challenges that both homeowners and renters face center on pipes bursting. When it gets cold enough, standing water in pipes freezes. This ice expands and cracks the pipes resulting in leaks and other damage - both cosmetic and structural. The main problem lies in the fact that many pipes were manufactured and installed into homes, apartment complexes, schools, retail businesses and commercial buildings prior to 1980. Unfortunately, asbestos fibers were likely used in the construction materials.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral substance whose fibers are soft and flexible yet resistant to heat, electricity and chemical corrosion. Pure asbestos is an effective insulator and many fabrication plants mixed asbestos fibers with other materials such as cloth, paper, cement and plastic to take advantage of the heat resistant qualities.

Unfortunately, when asbestos fibers are inhaled, numerous devastating conditions can arise including asbestosis and mesothelioma.

Many structures built prior to 1980 utilized asbestos fibers in water pipes, tiles and insulation. A burst pipe can eject microscopic fibers into the air, causing residents to inhale or ingest the deadly material. Even in a region that doesn't struggle with frozen water pipes might see water damage and asbestos exposure. Any building renovation or structural emergency can lead to toxic exposure. From damaged floor tiles to crumbling insulation, homeowners and renters alike should be aware of the possibility of asbestos exposure.

Doctors using a "Golden Key" to treat Mesothelioma

Italian researchers recently discovered a potential breakthrough in mesothelioma treatment. While shocking to most, this treatment involves one of the most precious metals in the world: gold.

Luckily, it is not as expensive as you might think. The gold that is used is in the form of nanoparticles.

dna-1811955_960_720.jpgHow does the treatment work?

First, gold nanoparticles are injected with chemotherapy. The nanoparticles are then "programmed" to find a specific point on a cancerous cell. Once the nanoparticles reach the cancerous cell, researchers believe that they can essentially "block malignant cell lines from replicating" and work to kill the cancerous cells.

Researchers believe this process will be a lot quicker and more effective than other treatment therapies. According to the report, the nanoparticles can reach the cancerous cells within 60 minutes after injection. Additionally, the process is significantly less toxic than other chemotherapy solutions that require higher dosages of chemotherapy to kill the cancer cells, because there was no way to specifically target cancerous points.

Can it also be used to detect cancer?

While the nanoparticles are only being tested to treat mesothelioma, researchers in Australia are also using gold particles for mesothelioma detection. Because cancer cells are drawn to the metallic properties in gold, scientists are working on ways to detect mesothelioma by dropping DNA and gold particles into a water solution. By using a microscope, researchers believe they have found a way to detect the presence of mesothelioma based on the color changes in the water.

Mesothelioma can leave you with thousands of dollars in medical bills. If you or a loved one are suffering from mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease, consult with an experienced mesothelioma attorney to discuss your options and retain the compensation you deserve.

Mesothelioma Risk for Oil Refinery Workers

Adobe Brayton15.jpegWhile workers in numerous industries are concerned about asbestos exposure, some occupations pose more danger than others. One industry, however, that might see a devastating boom in mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases - offshore oil rigs. land rigs and oil refineries.

Asbestos fibers were a significant component in building materials designed to be heat resistant or resistant to fire. Decades ago, for example, steam pipes, insulation and ceiling tiles contained asbestos with the ultimate goal of heat protection. Unfortunately, the inhalation of asbestos fibers can lead to asbestosis, mesothelioma and other deadly lung diseases.

In the 1970s, the oil industry experienced a worldwide boom. To keep up, companies were forces to build numerous oil rigs and land rigs. In an effort to meet consumer demand, construction started on oil refineries - processing plants where crude oil is refined into useful products. Oil refinery workers have potentially been exposed to asbestos in different products, such as:

  • Thermal insulation: Where heat and fire are a concern, the refinery machinery must be protected by a material that is heat and fire retardant. For example, pipelines, tanks, boilers, dryers, heat exchangers and pumps were often lined with asbestos insulation.
  • Refinery equipment: While the thermal insulation was designed to be fire retardant, the equipment itself was built to have the same qualities. Asbestos was an integral component in the manufacture of equipment such as gaskets that were used in piping and pumps to prevent leaks.
  • Construction products: Asbestos has been used in protective screens around on-site welding operations, in some brands of duct tape, and as insulation in floor, ceiling and roofing tiles, walls and work surfaces.
  • Protective equipment: The process of refining oil involves the use of high heat and flammable materials. As such, asbestos products were historically used to protect employees from these dangers. From protective clothing to safety equipment, workers in an oil refinery were potentially exposed to toxic materials.

Regardless of their specific occupation, most oil refinery workers have been exposed to dangerous substances on the job. Depending on the extent and duration of the exposure, workers could face devastating, deadly conditions such as mesothelioma. It is crucial that you act quickly to learn more about your disease and your legal options for monetary compensation.

Will a Breath Test be able to detect Mesothelioma?

Thumbnail image for lung-cancer-types-stages-treatment.jpgOne day, doctors might be using breathalyzers more frequently than law enforcement. Clinical tests are currently underway to determine if a new breath testing tool could be able to detect malignant cancers, including mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the lining of internal organs. Generally, it is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. Tragically, many individuals with mesothelioma might not experience cancer symptoms for 10 to 50 years after asbestos exposure. By that time, the cancer is normally so progressed that patients are only given a short time to live. However, a new invention in cancer screening technology could change all that.

Researchers have been working on the development of a cancer screening device that will allow for earlier detection of mesothelioma. The newly developed breath test will work by detecting "volatile organic compounds" in the breath that indicate the presence of cancer. Researchers suggest that the main benefits of the breath testing technology will include:

  • An earlier diagnosis and ability to begin treatment sooner
  • A less invasive and less painful procedure
  • A less expensive procedure for doctors and patients

Doctors at the Cancer Research Center in the United Kingdom are currently compiling samples from cancer patients, as well as healthy individuals, to determine the accuracy of the tests. While the clinical trials are not yet testing mesothelioma patients, doctors are hopeful that the breath tests will be able to detect asbestos-related diseases in the near future.

If you or someone you love is suffering from mesothelioma or an asbestos-related disease, consult with an experienced asbestos attorney to discuss your options. You might be able to file a lawsuit and receive compensation for your medical bills.

Investigation Finds Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder Contains Asbestos

hands-731241_960_720.jpgWhile not every baby powder test was positive for Asbestos, the Reuters investigation found J&J was aware of the positive tests and did not take efforts to alert the public of the potential harm. The investigation also uncovered efforts by J&J to persuade lawmakers from restricting asbestos regulations. Additionally, the documents suggested the company wanted to reduce research efforts on the negative effects of asbestos.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), any amount of asbestos exposure can potentially be harmful and cancer causing. The recent news reports suggest J&J baby powder has been linked to mesothelioma, ovarian cancer, pulmonary cancer and other asbestos-related diseases. However, the company is continuing to deny allegations that it knew asbestos was in its products.

The effects from asbestos exposure can be devastating. Tragically, many people exposed to asbestos through J&J baby powder or similar products can have a difficult time proving their case. If you or someone you love is suffering from an asbestos-related disease, consult with an experienced mesothelioma and asbestos attorney to discuss your options and help you retain the compensation you deserve.

Significant New Use Rule has increased U.S. Asbestos Imports

photography-1658459_960_720.jpg

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed the Significant New Use Rule (SNUR) to address harmful materials and their use in the United States. The new guidelines require notice to be given to the EPA before harmful substances, like asbestos, are used, but does not prevent them from being used.

Due to a loophole in SNUR, products containing asbestos will be allowed to be used without much interference from any government agency. The EPA will also no longer include the effects or presence of the harmful material in the air, ground, or water in their risk assessment.

As a result of this loophole that ignores the dangers of using asbestos, the United States is seeing is seeing an uptick in asbestos imports. The US imported 272 metric tons of asbestos in August alone. Imports for 2018 have already reached more than 550 tons, which is almost twice the amount imported in 2017.

Why Asbestos in Dangerous

Asbestos is a fibrous mineral used due to its strength heat resistance. It has been often used in textile products, automotive parts, home and commercial buildings, naval ships. Asbestos can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, among other cancers if inhaled or ingested.

Anyone can be exposed to asbestos. People who live or work near sites containing asbestos may be exposed to airborne particles. Asbestos was also used in many consumer products such as hairdryers. Family members may be exposed to asbestos fibers on the clothes of workers who work with or around asbestos products.
